ManpowerGroup was a pioneer in temporary employment placement and remains one of the largest actors in the field. Established in 1948 to supply blue-collar workers to industry, by the 1970s the company was becoming a major player in the clerical placement field. It began offering hiring, training and outsourcing services. Until this year, the company was known as Manpower Inc.
Today, the company maintains 4,000 offices in more than 80 countries and territories. Posted 2010 revenues of $22 billion translated into the No. 138 spot on the Fortune 1,000. The company has a worldwide staff of 30,000, but include the workers it places and that number swells to 3.5 million. Its Milwaukee headquarters was that city’s first new building to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold status.
