Ecolab Inc. develops and markets cleaning, sanitizing, pest-control and related products and services. It serves the food service, hospitality, institutional, industrial, health care and government markets.

The company’s origins date to 1923, when a traveling salesman named Merritt Osborn developed a product to clean hotel carpets on site rather than sending them out. He also formulated a soap for use in dishwashing machines. He called his company Economics Laboratory. The company went public in 1957. The name change came in 1986.
