Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. came in for sharp criticism last week for his soft-spoken handling of what are likely to be the most important oral arguments of his career.

In tone and substance, according to some who heard him argue on all three days, Verrilli missed opportunities to parry hostile justices or his forceful opponents, while defending the Affordable Care Act as a valid exercise of congressional power.
