Hundreds of thousands of American Indians stand to benefit from a landmark $3.4 billion settlement of a class action over the government’s mismanagement of their money and land.

The legal team representing lead plaintiff Elouise Cobell put their own price tag on the success-$224 million. Cobell’s lawyers in May pushed for the nearly quarter-billion dollar legal fee-even comparing the attorneys’ plight to that of the victims at the heart of the case.
