Setting the stage for a U.S. Supreme Court battle, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on May 31 held that the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutionally denies federal benefits to same-sex couples who are legally married under state laws. Postal worker Nancy Gill and her partner Marcelle Letourneau are the lead plaintiffs.

FLORIDA VOTERS

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Florida from enforcing elements of its new law tightening the rules for voter-registration drives. U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle in Tallahassee, Fla., ruled on May 31 that the provisions — including a tight deadline for turning in voter forms — were “harsh and impractical” and “serve[d] little if any purpose.”
