Abon Pharmaceuticals LLC develops generic and proprietary drug products. Salah Ahmed founded the company in 2009 with attorney Bruce Downey and Sanford Bolton, a former pharmacy professor. Before founding Abon, Ahmed and Downey worked together at Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc., Downey as chairman and chief executive officer and Ahmed as chief scientific officer.

According to general counsel Heidi Kraus, the company is developing a variety of generic drugs, especially targeting areas with few competitors or where there are opportunities for new formulation, such as slow-release versions. Abon has yet to bring a drug to market. The Northvale, N.J., company is privately held and does not disclose its revenue. It has 42 employees and, Kraus said, the work force grew during the recession, although by less than 10 percent.
