Journalist-turned-investment banker James Dolan founded The Dolan Co.’s predecessor in 1992 with backing from Cherry Tree Investments LLC. Together, they purchased Finance and Commerce in Minneapolis, the first link in what would become a chain of about 40 daily and weekly business and legal publications, including Lawyers Weekly in Boston; the Daily Journal of Commerce in Portland, Ore.; Federal News Service in Washington; and the New Orleans Publishing Group.
The company was active in the business of public-records publishing, selling that arm in 2003 to LexisNexis Group. In recent years, Dolan has expanded into electronic-discovery hosting and mortgage-default processing.
