This term, the U.S. Supreme Court decided several key cases regarding defendants’ rights in criminal cases. In Missouri v. Frye, 132 S. Ct. 1399 (2011), and Lafler v. Cooper, 131 S. Ct. 856 (2011), the court held that defendants have a Sixth Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel during the plea bargaining process. In Miller v. Alabama, 132 S. Ct. 548 (2011),

the court held that the Eighth Amend­ment forbids mandatory sentences of life without parole for juvenile offenders. Finally, the court held in U.S. v. Jones, 132 S. Ct. 945 (2012), that the warrantless use of a beeper to track the movements of a car is unconstitutional.
