The University of Pennsyl­vania Law School is launching a center dedicated to policy and research of the U.S. criminal justice system with the help of a $15 million donation from investment banker Frank Quattrone. In 2004, Quattrone was convicted for interfering in a federal investigation of Credit Suisse Group A.G., but the verdict was overturned in 2006 and the charges dropped the following year.

ABUSES ALLEGED

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on May 30 filed suit in Miami federal court alleging that a Florida company misled consumers and charged illegal fees for its services. The complaint charged American Debt Settlement Solutions Inc. with actions that are not just unfair and deceptive, but also abusive. The company intentionally "enrolled in its debt-relief programs consumers whose financial ­conditions make it highly unlikely that they can complete the ­programs," the agency said.
