With its central business district leveled by the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 — caused, according to legend, by a lantern accident — the city provided an eager customer base for what would become Commonwealth Edison Co., one of the oldest and largest power companies in the United States. ComEd is now one of three major urban utilities owned and operated by Exelon Corp., including Philadelphia's PECO Energy Co. and Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. Exelon today generates and distributes power in 47 states, Washington and parts of Canada.

LEGAL TEAM

General counsel Darryl Bradford supervises 102 lawyers, one third of them located at the company's Chicago headquarters. Another third are located in Baltimore and the rest of the company's attorneys are spread around Louisville, Ky.; Houston; Philadelphia; and Washington. In addition to general legal work, the department oversees regulatory compliance and corporate governance, Bradford said. Exelon's merger last year with Constellation Energy Group Inc. led to a reorganization of internal counsel by function, he said.
