Founded in 1954 by a former Department of Veterans Affairs medical director, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is now the nation's No. 1 rehabilitation hospital, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The institute, located in Chicago's lakefront medical district, just broke ground on a new facility to double its size by 2016. The company operates a network of hospitals and outpatient and day rehabilitation clinics in Illinois and Indiana. It specializes in the treatment of complex conditions including spinal-cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
