Hillshire Brands Co. had a sweet start. Its original parent, Chicago-based food conglomerate Sara Lee Corp., split into two publicly held firms in 2012: Amsterdam-based coffee-and-tea manufacturer D.E. Master Blenders 1753 and Chicago-based Hillshire Brands, now home to all of Sara Lee’s well-known desserts. Hillshire’s meat brands include Hillshire Farms, Ball Park, Jimmy Dean, State Fair, Aidells and Gallo Salame. Based on Chicago’s west side, Hillshire employs 9,000 workers and reported 2013 revenues of $3.92 billion.
