Fox News reporter Jana Winter may invoke New York’s Shield Law to block a subpoena issued by a Colorado court to compel her to reveal her sources for an article about James Holmes, the “Batman” theater shooter, a divided state high court ruled on Dec. 10. Writing for the 4-3 majority, Judge Victoria Graffeo of the New York Court of Appeals said that upholding the Colorado subpoena “would offend our strong public policy — a common law, statutory and constitutional tradition that has played a significant role in this State becoming the media capital of the country if not the world.”
DROP IN FEMALE ASSOCIATES
The percentage of women associates at law firms fell during 2013 for the fourth straight year. Women accounted for 44.79 percent of associates, down from 45.66 percent at their peak in 2009. By contrast, the percentage of minority associates rose from 8.36 percent in 2009 to 20.93 percent in 2013. “This is a significant historical shift, and represents a divergence in the previously parallel stories of women and minorities in large law firms,” NALP executive director James Leipold said.
