Improper comments by a District of Columbia Superior Court judge meant new sentencing hearings for two defendants sent to jail for simple assault.
The D.C. Court of Appeals found Judge Brian Holeman’s statements in court raised concerns he was encouraging the defendants to accept a plea deal and meted out stiffer punishment because they chose to go to trial.
