An employer’s decision to deny disability retirement benefits to a former employee was “arbitrary and capricious” by failing to provide a reasoned explanation for the denial, a federal appeals court ruled on Feb. 13.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed the judgment of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, which had upheld the denial of benefits to Kyle Kennard, a machine operator at Means Industries, under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA.
