Three elderly widows and a widower have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, alleging that it has failed to protect them from the unscrupulous reverse mortgage companies.

The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, was filed on Feb. 27 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. It claims that HUD is not following a law that requires it to protect surviving spouses from losing their homes through reverse mortgages.
