A former West Virginia University running back has filed a class action in California federal court against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and five major conferences, claiming they illegally colluded to artificially cap the value of athletics scholarships below what it costs to attend school.

Plaintiff Shawne Alston also claims the system sets the value of scholarships below what a Football Bowl Subdivision football player would receive for his services in a competitive market, in violation of the landmark federal antitrust law known as the Sherman Act.
