Reaction to Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision on campaign contributions was swift and polarized, with Republicans praising the ruling as a victory and Democrats decrying it as a blow to fair elections.

The court ruled as unconstitutional the aggregate limit on money an individual can give political campaigns and political action committees—$123,000 per cycle. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. announced the decision for a divided court in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission.
