Criminal Charges: Federal prosecutors are nearing criminal charges against Credit Suisse and BNP Paribas, and may secure the first guilty pleas from major banks in more than two decades, The New York Times reports. Credit Suisse is under fire for offering tax shelters to Americans, and BNP Paribas, France’s largest bank, has allegedly done business with countries like Sudan that the United States has blacklisted.

Botched Execution: An Oklahoma inmate died of an apparent heart attack after a botched execution. A new drug combination left Clayton Lockett, 38, writhing and clenching his teeth on the gurney. The state’s top prison official eventually called a halt to the proceedings and Lockett died of a heart attack a short time later, the Associated Press reports.
