Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens appeared before a Senate committee Wednesday for the first time since his confirmation hearings nearly 39 years ago, advocating for a constitutional amendment for campaign finance reform.

The rare testimony from an ex-justice drew extra attention to the Senate Rules Committee hearing, which focused on a response to the high court’s decision this month in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission that struck limits on aggregate campaign contributions.
