The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission today issued a strongly worded investor alert to warn consumers that sinking money into bitcoin or other virtual currency-related opportunities is a risky proposition.
“As a recent invention, bitcoin does not have an established track record of credibility and trust,” the SEC said. “If fraud or theft results in you or your investment losing bitcoins, you may have limited recovery options.”
