Patton Boggs’ $15 million settlement with Chevron Inc. comes at a moment when the firm’s future has wobbled by the month.

The settlement wipes away an issue that had poisoned merger discussions between Patton Boggs and at least one other firm, Locke Lord, freeing the Washington lobbying powerhouse to pursue a merger with the international verein Squire Sanders without the suit’s liability. The firm has been in talks with Squire Sanders since December.
