Darigold Inc., one of the largest U.S. dairy producers, is facing a proposed class action that alleges the company has allowed sick and injured cows to be milked, mistreats the animals, and denies some dairy workers drinkable water and breaks to rest and eat.

Plaintiffs allege Darigold, a Washington state dairy association with 500 participating farms, knew of such abuses but portrayed itself in a 2010 Corporate Social Responsibility report and in its marketing as producing milk in an environment that is “safe for animals, healthy for consumers and respectful of workers’ rights.”
