At Dickstein Shapiro, a decline in total attorneys stemmed from a “strategic commitment” to be a specialty firm. Epstein Becker & Green said it has “shed unprofitable locations and practices,” while Bingham McCutchen “made a conscious decision not to try to be big and less profitable.”

Many of the NLJ 350 law firms with big declines in total attorneys in 2013 offered varied explanations that all get at the same basic struggle: How to grow profits amid a stagnant overall demand for legal services.
