A consumer has targeted Merck & Co. Inc. with a class action in a California federal court, claiming the company’s Coppertone sunscreen products labeled with a sun protection factor of 55 or greater do not provide superior ultraviolet B protection than lower SPF-valued products.

San Diego resident Danika Gisvold filed the proposed California-only class action on June 4 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. The complaint accuses New Jersey-based Merck and its subsidiaries of charging higher prices for products in the Coppertone SPF 55-100+ collection, even though they provide no more sun protection than the Coppertone SPF 50 products.
