The Mississippi Supreme Court has reversed $500,000 in punitive damages and nearly $500,000 in attorney fees and costs in an asbestos case. The court upheld $250,000 in compensatory damages for the plaintiff.
Plaintiff Russell Nix Sr. worked for six years during the 1980s for a drilling company, WellTech, maintaining the viscosity of drilling mud with two Union Carbide Corp. products that were 99 percent asbestos: Visbestos and Super Visbestos. Mixing the drilling mud created dust containing asbestos.
