Consumer demand for gluten-free foods has increased, with some people voluntarily going gluten-free and others being diagnosed with an intolerance for gluten. As more food manufacturers seek to tap into that market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued advice for small businesses on how to appropriately label food items.
The FDA issued a final rule in August 2013 to standardize what gluten-free means for food manufacturers who opt to put gluten-free labels on their products. Gluten-free foods must comply with the FDA labeling requirements as of Aug. 5.
