Fighting for LGBT rights motivated Ashland Johnson to become a lawyer. After earning her J.D. in 2011, she went to work for the National Women’s Law Center, focusing on health and reproductive rights. She moved to the National Center for Lesbian Rights in 2012, where she has advocated for LGBT issues related to the Affordable Care Act and on behalf of LGBT athletes.

Johnson has traveled to rural communities to lead training on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s LGBT nondiscrimination rules.
