Sam Simon doesn’t worry about defending the legislative proposals he crafts as senior counsel for Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. By the time the ideas get outside the office, Simon already had faced a gauntlet of questions from Blumenthal, a former Connecticut attorney general. “Just when you think you’re the expert, he’s just weighing in. He’ll cite some precedent only he could know and want to know how you read it,” Simon said.

Blumenthal depends on Simon to press key issues as the senator’s Senate Judiciary Committee staffer, including stiffer gun-control laws following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut in 2012.
