Fordham University School of Law professor Zephyr Teachout won 34 percent of the vote on Sept. 9 in New York state’s Democratic primary against Gov. Mario Cuomo. Columbia Law School professor Timothy Wu won 40 percent of the vote against former congresswoman Kathy Hochul of Buffalo, Cuomo’s pick for the lieutenant governor nomination. Teachout had criticized Cuomo’s support of corporate tax policies and his decision to abruptly dismantle an anticorruption commission. “I will not be your next governor, but the Democrats of this state have been heard,” Teachout told supporters.
MEET LOCKE LORD EDWARDS
Locke Lord has signed a letter of intent to merge with Edwards Wildman Palmer, creating Locke Lord Edwards, a 1,113-lawyer firm with offices in 23 cities. The deal should close in mid-January 2015, pending votes of partners in both firms, Locke Lord chairwoman Jerry Clements said. Clements and Alan Levin, Edwards Wildman’s managing partner, jointly announced the deal on Sept. 9. Clements said a small group of partners from each firm met during the summer in Dallas and came away “feeling we had similar cultures and some opportunities.”
