Founded in a law office above a Chicago hardware store in 1850, Northwestern University’s mission was to train the ambitious and growing population of the Midwestern frontier. Today it is a private research university ranked No. 12 overall by U.S. News and World Report, with campuses in Evanston, Ill.; Chicago; and Qatar. Last year its $7.9 billion endowment was the 10th largest for a U.S. university. Northwestern fought a unionization effort by its football team but the Chicago office of the National Labor Relations Board approved the students’ effort.
