The Navajo Nation had spent six years fighting the federal government over the management of trust accounts when the tribe, in 2012, switched firms. The Navajo turned to BuckleySandler, which negotiated a $554 million settlement that the U.S. Department of Justice and Department of the Interior signed on Friday.
The deal is the largest settlement ever between the federal government and a single tribe, the law firm said. The case was the latest partnership between the Navajo Nation and firm partner Samuel Buffone, who had represented the tribe on other matters since 1999. Buffone said the tribe’s previous lawyers brought him in for some limited work, but that soon changed.
