A San Diego company that hired “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek to tout its educational products settled Federal Trade Commission charges of deceptive advertising and telemarketing violations on Thursday.

WordSmart Corp. and its president, David Kay, were faulted by the agency for claiming the company’s products would boost kids’ grades, test scores and IQs without adequate proof of results. For example, the company guaranteed that students who used WordSmart for 20 hours would improve letter grades by at least one GPA point, SAT scores by at least 200 points and ACT scores by at least four points.
