Deputy Attorney General James Cole, second-in-command at the U.S. Department of Justice since 2010, is stepping down, a Justice Department official confirmed on Thursday.
Cole is the latest in a string of recent or planned departures by top Justice Department officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. and Tony West, the former associate attorney general—third-in-command—who left in September to become general counsel of PepsiCo Inc. Holder, who said he won’t leave until a successor is confirmed, hasn’t announced what he’ll do next.
