Robert Smith of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius watched labor and employment practices in Washington shapeshift over four decades. The practice began as a relatively obscure niche that dealt with unions, grew into challenging discrimination complaints, and recently headed back to niche work and with declining profits.

Smith’s retirement this month from the firm, with one of the first and largest labor and employment groups in Washington, puts into perspective how a practice, squeezed by the commoditization of Big Law services, can still manage to survive.
