Environmental and animal groups have sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over their approvals of ractopamine-based animal drugs since 2008 allegedly without conducting the environmental analysis required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
In two separate but related suits filed Nov. 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the groups claim the ractopamine hydrochloride (ractopamine) products, which are used as food additives to rapidly boost the weight of pigs, cattle and turkeys, pose a risk to humans, animals and the environment.
