City Colleges of Chicago began as Crane Junior College in 1911, founded by the Chicago Board of Education. By the 1920s, it was the largest junior college in the nation.

With a proposed 2015 budget of $723.5 million, City Colleges remain Illinois' largest community-college system, serving more than 115,000 students annually at seven colleges and six satellite sites with a faculty and staff of more than 5,700.
