Auto companies that recalled 7.8 million U.S. cars and trucks over exploding air bags linked to injuries and deaths have retained counsel amid mounting legal pressure.

At least six auto companies have hired lawyers to defend against 50 lawsuits filed over air bags made by Takata Corp., which faces increasing scrutiny from federal regulators and Congress over a defect in its air bags that causes them to explode, pelting drivers with metal shrapnel. The recalls involve more than 50 models of BMW, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota vehicles that used the Takata air bags.
