The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning against the use of laparoscopic power morcellators in the removal of the uterus or fibroids in women.

In an updated safety communication, originally issued in April 2014, the FDA said the surgical device may spread cancerous tissue, often hidden or undetected, and shouldn’t be used in gynecological surgery that involves cancer or fibroids.
