Milwaukee-based Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. describes itself as the nation’s largest direct provider of individual life insurance, and also offers long-term care and disability insurance, investments and wealth-management services. The company was founded in 1872 and now has $217.1 billion in assets, ranking 110th on the Fortune 500.
