Republican lawmakers in Washington are forging ahead with legislation to change a key requirement of the Affordable Care Act, setting up a potential showdown between the new GOP-controlled Congress and President Barack Obama over his signature health care law.
With the newly minted Congress in session Tuesday, Rep. Todd Young, R-Ind., and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, reintroduced bills they offered in 2013 to redefine a “full-time employee” under the ACA as an individual who works at least 40 hours per week, rather than 30 hours or more. The health care law required companies with at least 100 full-time employees to provide insurance to 70 percent of those workers by Jan. 1 or face penalties.
