Boston federal judge George O’Toole Jr. refused to postpone the trial of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in part because he didn’t believe more time would dampen the publicity surrounding the case.

That’s one of the justifications O’Toole offered Wednesday in releasing a five-page document explaining his reasoning. He’d rejected Tsarnaev’s bid for a delay on Dec. 31. Jury selection began on Monday.
