The Consumer Product Safety Commission has begun the process of establishing mandatory safety standards for window covering products, aimed at lowering the risk of young children being strangled to death by the cords attached to curtains, shades and blinds.

“The Commission has reason to believe that certain cords on window coverings may present an unreasonable risk of injury to young children,” the agency said in an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) for corded window coverings and published Jan. 16 in the Federal Register.
