Marry on: The U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to stop same-sex marriage in Alabama gave civil rights advocates some hope the high court will declare state bans unconstitutional later this year. Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Antonin Scalia, wrote a dissent in which he said his colleagues had taken an “increasingly cavalier attitude toward the states.” The two justices voted to stop same-sex marriage in Alabama.
“This acquiescence may well be seen as a signal of the court’s intended resolution of that question,” Thomas wrote. The New York Times has this story: “Justice Thomas’s Dissent Hints of Supreme Court’s Intentions on Same-Sex Marriage.” Over at POLITICO: “ Gay marriage supporters hear a clarion call.” USA Today has coverage here, The Wall Street Journal here, BuzzFeed News here and Reuters here. The Washington Post reports: “Judicial defiance in Alabama: Same-sex marriages begin, but most counties refuse.”
