Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro got one of its best ideas from one of its own. A former firm secretary called managing partner Steve Berman to complain that she’d taken a $4,000 loss on the sale of her Toyota because of negative publicity following the automaker’s sudden-­acceleration defect.

That sparked the firm’s involvement in lawsuits that in late 2012 resulted in one of the largest settlements ever in an automotive class action, for $1 billion.
