Launched in 2009, Goal Zero LLC produces portable solar generators that bring light and energy to poor people in remote areas across the globe, to outdoor adventurers and to victims of natural disasters.

The name invokes founder Robert Workman’s mantra: zero apathy, zero boundaries, zero regrets. The Salt Lake City-based business has about 120 employees, including two in Germany and a team in China working with manufacturers. The privately held company was acquired last year by NRG Energy Inc. but operates relatively independently.
