Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens last week praised Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. for his temperate opinions, while implicitly criticizing Justice Antonin Scalia for using “disrespectful rhetoric” in a key ruling last term.

Stevens spoke before the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation in Chicago July 31, and the text of his talk was posted on the court’s website. Stevens is one of very few justices who make the text of their remarks available online.
