Twenty-five years later: The FBI released a never-before-seen security video Thursday that could be linked to the 1990 robbery that took place at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The video shows a museum security guard allowing a suspicious, unidentified man into the museum the night before a half billion dollars worth of irreplaceable art was stolen. The video release is “part of a plea to the public for help in cracking what has become the art world’s most important loss and most enduring mystery,” the Hartford Courant reports. The video refocuses attention on former Gardner security guard Richard Abath, who has admitted that he violated security policy the night of the robbery when he allowed two thieves disguised as police officers into the museum. Police have not explained when they discovered the newly released video or their decision on the timing of its release. The Boston Globe has more.
