While GOP presidential hopefuls invoked the legacy of Ronald Reagan on a California debate stage on Sept. 16, a group of high-powered lawyers and judges met in New York to honor another storied American: Thurgood Marshall. Guests at the New York event — the 75th Anniversary Alumni Reunion of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund — were themselves a notable part of the late Supreme Court justice’s legacy, said Sherrilyn Ifill, the LDF’s seventh president and director-counsel.

The reunion of former LDFers was a Who’s Who of national legal talent, many either Washington-based or with strong D.C. ties: Vernon Jordan, senior counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld; Children’s Defense Fund founder and president Marian Wright Edelman; D.C. Circuit Judge Cornelia “Nina” Pillard; former U.S. Solicitor General Drew Days; former EEOC General Counsel Bill Robinson; Judge Yvonne Williams of D.C. Superior Court; Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Vanita Gupta and husband Chinh Le, legal director of the Legal Aid Society in D.C.; former Deputy White House Counsel Cassandra Butts; Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr partner Debo Adegbile; Nicole Austin-Hillery, director and counsel of The Brennan Center for Justice’s Washington office; and LDF associate director-counsel Janai Nelson.
