With six U.S. Supreme Court justices in the audience, President Barack Obama on Tuesday night sidestepped any direct discussion of the court in his final State of the Union address. He briefly mentioned contentious legal issues, including voting rights, campaign finance and marriage equality.

Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan attended the address. Absent were Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito Jr., who have publicly stated their distaste for attending what they view as a political event.
